McDonald's has removed a holiday commercial made with AI following receiving significant online backlash.

The 45-second ad was created with the help of AI-generated video and was originally published publicly for McDonald's Netherlands on 6 December.

Viewer Reaction and Decision to Pull

Soon after it aired, commenters criticized the use of AI in the film. Many described it as "uncanny" and "jarringly assembled".

"This moment represents an important learning as we explore the appropriate utilization of AI," said a representative from the company.

The commercial was created for the brand by Netherlands-based agency TBWA\Neboko and US production company The Sweetshop. It portrayed a series of scenarios that might go awry during the Christmas break, using the slogan "the worst time of the year".

A Growing Trend of AI-Generated Ads

Commercials that incorporate AI-created content have become a increasing trend among large corporations, particularly for the holiday period.

  • Another beverage giant has also released consecutive AI-generated Christmas ads.
  • Inherent Limitations: Because videos made using generative AI are prone to degrade the longer they run, most AI video outputs tend to be only short in length.
  • Broader Implications: The video also sparked concerns about job displacement in the creative industry, with some observers stating it could affect opportunities for production staff.

Response from the Production Company

Following the ad being taken down, The Sweetshop's CEO, Melanie Bridge, spoke in support of the project.

Bridge claimed, the creation took "over a month and a half" and involved creating "thousands of takes" which were then crafted in post-production "just as we would on any high-craft production".

"This was not an experiment," Bridge asserted. "The result was a finished piece."

Mixed Audience Sentiment

While the McDonald's commercial was predominantly panned, the response for other AI-assisted holiday ads has been varied.

For instance, a recent AI-generated Christmas ad from another major brand according to analysis achieved a significant "positive feedback" from online commenters.

However, several companies have also encountered backlash for using AI in their campaigns. Luxury brand Valentino, for example, was lambasted for ads that some described as "low-effort" and "uncanny".

The episode underscores the continuing debate within the advertising and creative industries about the balance between AI efficiency and creative integrity.
